Your humble narrator living in the moment
I feel most alive when I am living in the moment. Free of thoughts, judgements, worries, ambitions, and doubts. A state of just being. I reach this place when I am fully immersed in a mixture of the physical and cerebral. A state of relaxed concentration.
Working as a programmer leaves me frazzled
Long periods of time sitting, staring at a screen. Tackling complex problems. Working to deadlines whilst the specification is changing. Being accountable. Working on projects on the side, optimistic that one day something will take off. Planing the future. Judging markets and demand. Getting into a users head space. Simplifying interfaces (a complex task). Working as a programmer tends to leave me frazzled.
A counter balance to work to stay productive
My ‘living in the moment’ activities keep me sane. They transport me to a special timeless state. They relax and leave me with an overwhelming sense of calm; a healthy form of drug abuse. I no longer feel like a complex human. I feel simple, satisfied, almost primal. A few hours climbing a cliff face eradicates all my stresses leaving me recharged and ready for the next work sprint. They keep me productive and prevent me from burn out. They give me a perspective on my ‘problems’ and ‘dilemmas’. I can’t imagine not having these moments in my life.
What’s your living in the moment activity?
If you don’t have a ‘living in the moment’ activity I suggest finding one. It’s an escape from the clutter of our everyday life. A way to free us from the limitations of time. In our complex modern lives these moments are a necessity for survival.
